Kanau (叶う) means “to be fulfilled” in Japanese. It’s the feeling when a long-held dream — to host an international guest, or to find a real second home abroad — finally comes true.

How we started

Kanau was founded in Vancouver in 2021 by a small team of bilingual coordinators who had been arranging informal homestays for friends-of-friends from Japan. As demand grew, so did the realization: families wanted a better way to host, and Japanese students wanted a trusted agency that actually spoke their language.

We’ve kept the agency intentionally small. Every host we work with has met one of our coordinators in person. Every student has been screened, interviewed, and matched by hand — not by an algorithm.

What makes us different

We’re hands-on. When something needs a translator at 9pm on a Sunday, you can reach a real person. When a student needs to switch homes mid-stay, we handle it directly.

We’re bilingual end-to-end. Our students apply in Japanese. Our hosts apply in English. We bridge the two so neither side has to navigate language barriers on top of everything else.

We’re a marketplace, not a middleman. Host families set their own expectations. Students share their preferences honestly. Our job is to make the matches that work — not to push placements that don’t fit.

What we believe

• Hospitality is mutual. A great homestay isn’t a transaction. Both sides give, both sides grow.
• Small is better. We’d rather have 80 happy host families than 800 stressed ones.
• Money matters, but it isn’t the point. The $600–$1,000/month is real and matters — but the friendships and growth are the story.
• Communication beats contracts. Clear expectations, set early and revisited often, prevent 99% of problems.
